AIRBORNE EXPRESS INTRODUCES NEW CUSTOMER-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE TOOLS

SEATTLE — January 17, 1996 — Airborne Express has introduced two new Windows®-based software tools that give customers even more control and choices for meeting their U.S. and global shipping needs.

LIGHTSHIPTM TRACKER is the first on-line shipment tracking software that allows customers to not only track up to 20 shipments at-a-time worldwide, but to store a permanent, comprehensive record of all shipments for later analysis. LIGHTSHIPTM World Directory is a complete, on-line directory of Airborne services worldwide.

LIGHTSHIPTM TRACKER allows shippers and receivers to tap into Airborne's state-of-the-art information system for timely status updates on multiple shipments. The service offers critical details on shipments traveling worldwide, including date and time of pickup, routing, status of the shipment at all points en route, and proof of delivery.

"Many customers who currently call our customer service number or dial into our mainframe computer system to track shipments will really appreciate LIGHTSHIPTM TRACKER, " said Jill Gwazdauskas, Airborne vice president for National Accounts. "When they want to examine their shipping data more closely, for reports and budget analyses, LIGHTSHIPTM TRACKER will provide the information with a few keystrokes."

LIGHTSHIPTM World Directory provides customers with information ranging from transit times to more than 200 countries and overseas service centers to customs requirements and billing options. It's accessible from any personal computer, 24-hours-a-day and can store personalized shipping information, including details about countries, goods or contacts of particular importance to the customer.

Together, the new tools will enable Airborne customers, large or small, to have more knowledge and control of their own shipping activities. "They're really an extension of our corporate philosophy," Gwazdauskas noted. "We don't expect our customers to fit a mold we impose on them. Our entire focus is on empowering our customers with tailored solutions. We're constantly looking for ways to adapt our way of doing business to the needs of our customers."

The initial version of LIGHTSHIPTM TRACKER is being distributed to select Airborne customers. Expanded distribution of enhanced software, incorporating recommendations from these first users, will occur later in the year. The software will also be made available on the Internet in early 1996.
